I put together this video to show exactly how to unpin a post in a Facebook group without deleting it. It’s a quick and easy fix that a lot of group admins and moderators overlook.

Whether you’re managing a large community or just keeping things organized in a private group, knowing how to control what appears at the top of the feed is key. Sometimes, you want to rotate featured content or make room for a new announcement — without removing an older post entirely.

Here’s how to do that.

Step 1: Go to your group and find the pinned post

Start by heading to the Facebook group where the pinned post is located. You can do this from the Facebook app or desktop — the process is almost identical.

Scroll to the top of the group feed where pinned posts live. These are usually marked with a small “Pinned Post” label and often stay fixed to the top unless you manually change it.

Step 2: Click the three-dot menu on the post

Next to the pinned post, you’ll see a three-dot menu icon (⋯). Tap or click that to reveal post management options.

This menu lets you:

  • Edit the post

  • Delete the post

  • Turn off notifications

  • And importantly — Unpin from top

Click “Unpin from top” and the post will immediately go back into the regular feed order.

It won’t be deleted. It won’t be archived. It’ll still be visible to anyone in the group, just no longer locked to the top of the page.

Step 3: Verify the post has been unpinned

After unpinning, the post will slide back into its original place in the timeline, based on when it was posted.

If you don’t see it right away:

  • Scroll through the group feed

  • Or use the search bar in the group to look it up by keywords or poster name

This is a great way to keep your group tidy, especially during busy periods like launches, promotions, or community events.

Why unpin instead of delete?

Here’s when I usually unpin posts:

  • After an event has ended but the recap is still useful

  • When rotating weekly challenges or announcements

  • To make space for new updates without losing engagement history

  • To declutter the top of the feed without breaking links

Deleting posts can feel abrupt, and you lose all the comments and reactions. Unpinning gives you flexibility without sacrificing community content.

Bonus: Replace it with a new pinned post

Want to swap it with something new? Just pin another post — Facebook will automatically unpin the old one if needed. Only one post can be pinned at a time in most group setups.

In the video, I show this process step-by-step inside one of my own groups so you can see how it works in real time.

Are you managing your Facebook group like a pro — or letting the wrong posts stay stuck at the top?
