Really enjoying The Untold History of the United States TV series. Like most of Oliver Stone’s films, it’s a little leftist and conspiratorial for me.
But looking into some of the events in more detail, it does uncover things I hadn’t considered.
Just in first couple of episodes:
– Japan didn’t surrender to the two US atomic bombs. They actually surrendered when the Soviet Union attacked them in Manchuria.
– Truman was pretty much a puppet president. If Henry Wallace hadn’t been forced out of being Vice President, this would, arguably, have led to the US not dropping the bombs (and therefore probably also changing history & the Cold War in particular).
– The Soviet Union lost far more troops and civilians than any other nation in WWII.
And, controversial as it is, did most to fight off Nazi Germany. Allies were largely in Africa and Mediterranean for large parts of the war.
