I watched a showing of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg at the BFI Southbank. It’s hardly ever shown on the big screen.

Packed audience, amazing crowd. Although I kept wanting to talk to them about oil futures and commodities trading as they were too left wing.

Umbrellas of Cherbourg, if you haven’t seen it, is a musical film where every line of dialogue in the movie is sung. And obviously in French.

The film is a melodrama with the ultimate melodramatic and quite moving ending. The audience applauded for the film’s end credits (you don’t see that often, especially not for a film from 1964!) and a grown man was audibly weeping at the end!

For the uninitiated, this is the film that La La Land and Midnight in Paris, among others, model.
