Secondary effects of Coronavirus (some positive, some negative, depending on beliefs/views):
= increase, = decrease – no moral bias. My thoughts included.
– Remote work / work from home (acceptance of the experiment that has already begun – many studies coming out of Beijing suggest productivity has INCREASED due to work from home).
– Traffic and congestion (decrease in CO2, etc).
– Fuel bills (people discover they don’t need their cars as much as they once assumed).
– Automotive accidents (of all kinds).
– Insurance industry (initial increase due to airline/holiday failures, then a widespread decrease when people discover that the industry is broken and needs overhauling).
– Homeschooling (+ test of methods/technologies for future schooling practices).
– Hand washing (increase in basic hygiene & social mores. Less seeing dudes walking out of toilets without washing hands! You can now touch the peanuts – no pun intended).
– Conventional flu & colds (massively down, due to society more aware and practicing better hygiene).
– Birthrate (use your imagination)
– Monogamy
– Empty arena sporting events (+ underperformance of players involved in empty arena games. Historically a bore!)
– Mental health issues (most people can’t work for long periods in isolation with their own thoughts)
– Restaurant bookings (you can now get that Saturday table anywhere at last minute!)
– Airline industry + holiday industry (obvious. many more companies to fall due to falling margins/weak industry +virus concerns)
– Software/hardware companies (increase in speeds, infrastructure & accessibility to cope with work-from-home demand).
– Marriages (due to concern of large gatherings of people).
– Internet dating (less ability to meet people in person = more online-only relationships)
– Home cooked meals (more time at home, plus less eating out. Also, more drinking at home).
– Netflix
– Pornography
– eSports industry
– Online grocery shopping (more availability of items vs. bulk buy hit physical stores + paranoia of going to stores themselves).
Next 2 are big but could go either way. Both have a small chance of occurring, but more a mental exercise:
– Increased privatisation of medicine in the UK (strong arguments could be made to push for this, see: Black Swan event).
– Increased SOCIALISATION of medicine in the USA (strong arguments could be made to push for this, see: Black Swan event.)
In the aftermath, the research studies will be more about social science than medical science.
A massive discovery that people can be motivated to work towards the health & safety of others if their own health & safety is secured with the exact same methods.
