I created this short tutorial to show how to properly quote text when replying to comments or posting on Reddit. You can watch it here:
Quoting is one of those small but powerful formatting tricks that makes your Reddit comments easier to read and engage with. It’s perfect when you’re responding to a specific part of someone’s post or referencing a previous comment for clarity.
In the video, I walk through how to use the > symbol at the beginning of a line to turn any text into a quote. For example, typing:
> This is a quote
…will turn that line into a shaded quote block once posted.
You can also quote multiple lines or just a single sentence. It works in both replies and original posts. If you’re quoting from a long comment, I recommend only quoting the section you’re directly replying to — that keeps things clean and easy to follow.
I also demonstrate how Reddit formatting works differently on New Reddit vs. Old Reddit and how mobile formatting sometimes requires toggling to markdown mode if you’re using the app.
Using quotes correctly not only looks better, but it also shows that you’re being thoughtful in your responses. It helps readers follow your train of thought and can encourage more upvotes and discussion.
Have you used the quote feature before, or is this new for you?
