I created this video to walk through how to create your first blog post in WordPress — from writing and formatting to assigning categories, adding SEO, and hitting publish.
Starting a blog is exciting, but publishing that very first post can feel overwhelming. Whether you’re creating tutorials, personal updates, or product reviews, WordPress makes it pretty easy once you understand how it all fits together.
Here’s my full process.
Step 1: Go to Posts > Add New
From your WordPress dashboard, head to Posts in the left-hand menu, then click Add New. This opens the WordPress editor — either the block editor (Gutenberg) or the classic editor, depending on your settings.
This is where you’ll add:
-
The post title
-
Your main content
-
Images, links, quotes, and more
Step 2: Write and format your content
Use headings (H2, H3, etc.) to break your content into sections. I like to keep paragraphs short — just 1–2 sentences each — and make use of:
-
Bullet points for clarity
-
Bold text for emphasis
-
Internal links to related posts
You can embed YouTube videos, tweet cards, or even HTML widgets using the + icon.
In the video, I show how I paste in a formatted post I wrote in Notion and then tweak it for layout and readability.
Step 3: Add your metadata
Before publishing, you’ll want to:
-
Assign a category (or create a new one)
-
Add tags (optional, but great for topic grouping)
-
Set a featured image
-
Add a meta title and description using RankMath or Yoast (if installed)
Make sure your URL slug is clean — for example, change /how-to-create-a-post-in-wordpress-step-by-step-guide
to something like /create-wordpress-post
.
Step 4: Preview and publish
Click Preview to see how the post looks on desktop and mobile. Then hit Publish and confirm.
You can also:
-
Save as a draft
-
Schedule for a future date
-
Update later if needed
Are you setting up each post with proper structure, SEO, and featured images — or publishing and hoping for the best?
