If anyone can find a seller of a replica of this map (Salviati world map of 1525), I’ll pay good money for it!
It’s from the “there be dragons” era of map making and it’s believed to be the first map of its kind that was honest about the lack of knowledge of the wider world – notice the continent of America is not fully formed!
Super interesting. And I see it as a perfect metaphor for the quest for knowledge. In the past, they filled in the gaps/unexplored areas with guesses and untruths.
But this map showed, for the first time, that it was proper to acknowledge the limits of our knowledge.
