Two weeks ago, I decided to cut alcohol out of my life.
No more casual beers with friends, no wine with dinner. Just a clear-headed, sober existence.
And let me tell you, these two weeks have been eye-opening.
Why I Decided to Take the Break
You might be wondering, “Why the sudden change, Matt?”
For me, it wasn’t about hitting rock bottom or a sudden health scare. It was about taking control and making a conscious decision about what I put into my body.
It’s also been about testing my willpower and understanding my relationship with alcohol better.
I’ve done this challenge before for the infamous ‘Dry January’ and I think I did just over a month that time. It was an interesting challenge.
The Challenges
I won’t lie – it hasn’t been a walk in the park.
The first few days, especially, were a test of my resolve:
- Social Settings: Being around friends who were drinking while I sipped on water or a mocktail took some getting used to.
- The Ritual: For me, a glass of wine was a ritual after a long day. Finding new ways to unwind and signal the end of the day was a challenge.
The Surprises
However, it wasn’t all struggles. There were quite a few pleasant surprises:
- Clarity of Mind: I’m more focused than ever. Whether I’m working on Filmmaking Lifestyle or just spending time with loved ones, I feel present.
- Energy: No more groggy mornings! Even after a late night, I wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the day.
- Deepened Connections: Without the haze of alcohol, my conversations have become more meaningful. I’m listening more, understanding better, and connecting on a deeper level.
What’s Next?
Do I see myself never having a drink again? I don’t know.
What I do know is that this two-week journey has been a valuable learning experience.
It’s shown me that I have the strength to make choices that align with my values, even if they challenge societal norms.
To everyone reading this, know that it’s okay to question the status quo and make choices that are right for you.
Whether it’s giving up alcohol, starting a new business venture, or just taking a day off for self-care, trust yourself.
