I created this video to show how to write and publish a film review on Letterboxd, whether you’re rating a new release or logging a classic from your backlog.
Writing reviews on Letterboxd is one of the best ways to track your thoughts, reflect on what you’ve watched, and build a voice within the film community. It doesn’t need to be long or fancy — just honest and clear.
Step 1: Log a film
Search for the film using the top bar, click on it, then hit the “+” icon to log it.
You’ll see options to:
- Set your watch date
- Mark it as a rewatch
- Add a rating
- Write a review
You can log a film without writing anything, but to publish a review, you just need to write something in the text box.
Step 2: Write your review
Your review can be as short as one sentence or as long as a full essay. I often write:
- A quick emotional reaction
- A comment on the direction, editing, or writing
- A comparison to other films or filmmakers
Letterboxd also supports Markdown formatting, so you can add bold, italics, and lists if you want a more polished layout.
In the video, I show how I draft in Notion first, then paste it in — especially for longer or stylized reviews.
Step 3: Set visibility and spoilers
Before submitting, decide if your review contains spoilers. If so, tick the box — this adds a warning for others before they click.
You can also choose whether to make the review public or private.
Step 4: Submit and engage
Once submitted, your review appears:
- On your profile diary
- On the film’s page
- In your followers’ feeds
Engagement is a big part of Letterboxd — people may like, comment, or even follow you based on your writing style. I like to check the comments section on popular reviews to see what resonates.
Are you publishing every review publicly, or keeping your watchlist and ratings private for now?
