I made this video to show how you can customize your LinkedIn profile URL — which is one of those little personal branding steps that makes you look more professional, especially on resumes, business cards, or your website.
By default, LinkedIn gives you a messy URL like:
linkedin.com/in/john-smith-58294843
It’s not great for sharing, and it certainly doesn’t look polished. In this guide, I show how to clean that up in under 60 seconds.
Step 1: Go to your LinkedIn profile
From the home page, click on your profile picture, then scroll to the top of your profile view.
Step 2: Click “Edit public profile & URL”
On the right side, you’ll see this option — it opens a new tab where you can customize your public profile settings.
Step 3: Edit your URL
In the upper right of this new page, you’ll see your current profile link and an Edit icon (a pencil). Click it.
You can now enter a clean, short version — ideally something like:
- linkedin.com/in/johnsmith
- linkedin.com/in/j-smith
- linkedin.com/in/yourbrandname
Note: Only letters, numbers, and hyphens are allowed. It has to be unique, so common names might require a variation.
Step 4: Save and update links elsewhere
Once saved, your new URL will be active immediately. Be sure to update it on your resume, website, social profiles, email signature, or anywhere else your LinkedIn is listed.
In the video, I also cover a few personal branding tips — like matching your LinkedIn URL to your username on other platforms, and how a clean link signals that you’ve taken time to polish your professional presence.
Do you already have a custom LinkedIn URL, or is this one of those small wins you’ve been meaning to set up?
