I filmed this video to show how to add and follow users on Letterboxd, the film lover’s social platform that helps you track what you’ve watched and discover what to watch next.

If you’re new to Letterboxd, one of the best ways to get more out of it is by following other users. You’ll get insights from smart reviewers, curated lists from cinephiles, and real-time activity from friends.

Here’s how to find people worth following and how to build your own little corner of film community.

Step 1: Search for people directly

From the top menu on Letterboxd, click the search bar and type the name or username of the person you want to follow.

Once you land on their profile, you’ll see:

  • Their bio

  • Favorite films

  • Recent reviews and ratings

  • Custom lists

  • What they’re currently watching

Click the “Follow” button in the top-right corner to follow them.

Now their activity will appear in your Activity tab, which is essentially your social feed on Letterboxd.

Step 2: Use follower/following lists to expand your network

If you follow someone you like, you can check who they follow by clicking the “Following” tab on their profile.

This is one of my favorite ways to discover thoughtful reviewers or film fans in niche areas — like horror, international cinema, or documentaries.

In the video, I walk through how I found some of my favorite creators by going down this rabbit hole of connections.

Step 3: Explore curated lists and follow from there

Another way to find users worth following is by browsing Lists. Many people publish themed film lists — like “Best Slow Cinema,” “Underrated 90s Thrillers,” or “Films That Changed My Life.”

When you find a great list, click the creator’s profile and consider following them if their taste aligns with yours.

Step 4: Follow back or invite friends

You can also:

  • Follow people back who follow you

  • Invite friends via email or social links

  • Connect via Twitter if you’ve linked your account

Following is completely one-way (like Twitter), so you don’t need approval — and you won’t get cluttered inboxes or DMs.

Why follow others on Letterboxd?

  • Get recommendations you’d never find via Netflix

  • See thoughtful, funny, or brutal takes on popular films

  • Discover film movements, directors, or genres you’ve overlooked

  • Build a habit of reflecting on what you watch

I’ve found some of my all-time favorite films through someone else’s list or review on Letterboxd. It makes movie-watching feel more interactive and inspiring.

Are you watching films alone — or connecting with others who love them just as much as you do?
