I created a quick tutorial on my YouTube channel showing how to turn on shuffle play in Spotify. You can watch it here:
Spotify’s shuffle feature is a favorite among music lovers who want a spontaneous listening experience. Whether you’re on a morning walk or just don’t feel like hearing songs in the same order every time, shuffle mode can breathe new life into your playlists.
In the video above, I show you exactly how to turn on shuffle play using the mobile app and the desktop version. It’s a small button with a big impact on how you experience music.
On mobile, open your playlist or album and look for the two crisscrossed arrows — that’s the shuffle icon. It sits right below the album art, near the play and repeat controls. Tap it once and it will light up green, indicating that shuffle is active. It’s the same on desktop — click the icon, and Spotify will randomly mix your tracks.
It’s a simple feature, but it can trip people up because Spotify’s interface updates frequently, and the button isn’t always in the most obvious place.
If you’re using the free version of Spotify, shuffle might be your default mode for many playlists. You’ll notice that you can’t always play specific songs on demand — they shuffle automatically. On Premium, you get full control, including the ability to toggle shuffle on or off whenever you want.
The shuffle feature isn’t just for fun — it can actually help you appreciate songs you might otherwise skip. It breaks the habit of always going for your favorites and lets you rediscover hidden gems in your library.
I also shared in the video how to tell if shuffle is active, even when you’re not sure. If the shuffle icon is green, it’s on. If it’s white or greyed out, it’s off. Easy as that.
So next time you’re stuck in a music rut, give shuffle a try. You might end up falling in love with a song you forgot you had saved.
Are you a shuffle-all-the-way type of listener, or do you prefer a carefully curated sequence?
