I created this video to show how to easily edit YouTube video descriptions, whether you’re fixing a typo, adding new links, or updating your SEO content.
Your video description is more important than you think. It’s not just an afterthought or a place to dump links — it directly affects SEO, viewer retention, and how your content shows up in YouTube search.
I update my video descriptions regularly — not just for new uploads, but for older videos that start gaining traction again. This quick process can make a big difference in performance.
Step 1: Open YouTube Studio
Head to studio.youtube.com and log into your account. From there, go to Content in the sidebar — this is where all your videos live.
You can sort by visibility, title, publish date, or even search a keyword to find the video you want to update.
Click the pencil icon next to the video you want to edit.
Step 2: Edit the description field
Scroll down to the Description field. This is where you can:
-
Fix grammar or clarity
-
Add affiliate or resource links
-
Include timestamps
-
Update CTAs (e.g. “Check out my new course here”)
-
Add relevant hashtags (but no more than 3!)
I like to lead with a short summary of the video in paragraph form, then add links and other info below. In the video, I show the template I use — including:
-
📌 Watch next suggestions
-
💼 Tools mentioned
-
🛠️ Gear I use (Amazon affiliate links)
-
🔗 My website and socials
Step 3: Save your changes
Once you’re happy with the updated text, scroll up and click Save in the top right. The new description goes live instantly — no need to re-publish.
Bonus tip: Use tools like TubeBuddy or VidIQ to update descriptions across multiple videos if you’re maintaining a large channel.
Are you keeping your video descriptions up to date — or forgetting about them after upload?
