I put together a video showing exactly how to add hashtags to the top of your YouTube description so they appear above your video title. Here’s how it works:
This trick is great for visibility. When you add hashtags correctly in your description, up to three of them appear above the video title — and they’re clickable. It’s an easy way to connect your video to related topics and improve discoverability.
In the video, I show you how to:
- Open your YouTube video in Studio
- Go to the Description field
- Type your hashtags at the very beginning (e.g. #Productivity #TimeManagement)
- Save the changes and view the result live
You can add hashtags anywhere in the description, but YouTube only pulls from the first few lines to display them above the title. That’s why I always put them right at the top.
I also share tips on avoiding banned or misleading hashtags, since using them can hurt your visibility or even get the video flagged.
This is one of the fastest SEO boosts you can give a video, especially for trending topics or evergreen categories.
Do you use hashtags in your video descriptions yet? Or are you just adding them as tags?
